Warden Message
U.S. Embassy Yerevan
March 2, 2008
State of Emergency for Yerevan
The Government of Armenia has declared a State of Emergency in the city of Yerevan for 20 days, following yesterday's significant unrest, which resulted in serious casualties. The U.S. Embassy again recommends that all American Citizens avoid key downtown areas where protesters have been known to gather and where the police and military presence is high. If you live in the downtown area, exercise caution, avoid any large groups, and minimize unnecessary movements outside. Perform necessary errands during daylight hours. There is extensive police and military presence in Yerevan particularly concentrated in the downtown area. Numerous checkpoints exist on all major thoroughfares leading in and out of Yerevan. Vehicles are being routinely stopped, and individuals randomly searched by police and military personnel. If you find yourself in this situation, please cooperate promptly, comply with all orders and instructions, and identify yourself as an American citizen.
We wish to remind American citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. American citizens are therefore urged to avoid demonstrations, and to exercise caution when in the vicinity of any demonstrations. American citizens should stay current with media coverage of local events and be aware of their surroundings at all times. Information on upcoming demonstrations can be found at the following website: http://yerevan.usembassy.gov/consular/acs_warden.php.
