Medical Emergencies
If an American citizen becomes seriously ill or injured abroad, the Consular Section can assist in locating appropriate medical services and informing family or friends. For assistance during regular business hours (9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, except American and Azerbaijani holidays) you may call (994 12) 498 0335/6/7. If there is a life threatening emergency involving an American citizen after hours, you may call the same number and ask for the Duty Officer. For more information on consular assistance in such cases, please see: http://www.travel.state.gov/travel/tips/health/health_1185.html.
If you have a medical emergency while in Baku, you may wish to use Consular Section’s list of English speaking physicians and/or facilities. The Embassy assumes no responsibility for the professional ability or integrity of the institutions, individuals, hospitals and/or doctors listed herein.
A few Western-type medical clinics, the quality of which is comparable to those in Western countries, are operating in Baku. The quality of these clinics is good. However, medical facilities outside the capital remain inadequate, unsanitary, and unsafe. There is often a shortage of basic medical supplies, including disposable needles and vaccines.
The State Department can also provide information on various air ambulance companies that perform medical evacuations. For more information, please see: http://www.travel.state.gov/travel/tips/health/health_1185.html#air. However, the U.S. Government cannot pay for your medical evacuation. You need to make sure that you have medical evacuation insurance, available from many private companies, before the need arises.
