Official Speeches and Remarks by Ambassador Anne E. Derse
US Ambassador’s remarks at the Islamic University in Zagatala
May 4, 2008
As the U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan, I am honored to have the opportunity to meet with the Rector and to hear about the Islamic University.
Like Azerbaijan, my country is also blessed with a diversity of religions, including several million Muslim-Americans.
The United States and Azerbaijan also share a history of religious tolerance. Both countries welcome believers of all religions and respect their right to worship as they choose. The United States was founded by immigrants who moved to America in pursuit of greater freedom of religion. Azerbaijan, meanwhile, has an even longer history of co-existing religious communities.
In a time when terrorists and extremists continue to threaten the peace and stability of the civilized world, Azerbaijan is playing a critical role as a leader and model of a Muslim country with a tradition of tolerance.
This tradition must be coupled with religious education. This university, which teaches Azerbaijan's future religious leaders, has a special responsibility to teach tolerance and respect for all creeds and sects.
Thank you.
